Richard Hardy of New Richmond, Edgefield District SC and Parksville, McCormick Co

Richard Hardy is the 2nd child of 8 children named in John Hardy's will, administered in 1799 in Edgefield District SC. Any other children would have died before that. Click here for John Hardy family history and click here for Richard Hardy's sister Sarah Cunningham. In the 1790 census of SC he and his father appear in separate plantations in Edgefield District SC.

Slowly I have come to realize that Richard Hardy Jr bought his new plantation after his father died in what is now Parksville, Mc Cormick County SC but was at one time in Edgefield District, up Stephens Creek from the Savannah River, a mile from his father who was on the right side of the Creek on Sweet Water Creek near New Richmond which no longer exists but is just before Stephens Creek empties into the Savannah River, south of the creek. Of course they did not live right in New Richmond but a mile or so from it on Sweetwater branch Creek.

The tract of land Richard is living on is called the Home Tract at present day Parksville, McCormick Co SC (then Edgefield) and is 365 acres bound by Margaret Cartledge, Felix Parks, James Cunningham (Sarah Hardy's son), T. F. Key. He also possessed the Griffin (Griffis?) Tract of 240 acres on Bird Creek of Stephens Creek adjoining lands of Samuel Cartledge, Martin Burroughs, Abram Kilcrease, Richard Parks and others. He bought this of Sterling Harrison January 23, 1817, witnessed by Thomas Hardy his son and Joseph Cunningham his brother in law. It was on the Savannah River as well as on Bird Creek. Richard lived near his older sister Sarah who had probably already married Joseph Cunningham, and she attended the Culliham Mill Church. Richard Parks son Dr. Felix Gilchist Parks attended Richard Hardy before he died. Dr. Felix G. Parkes b ca 1821 (son of Richard Parks) wife was Sarah Elizabeth Quarles, the granddaughter of Richard Quarles jr. Buried in Old Fuller Cem., Liberty Hill, McCormick, SC and Sarah Middleton. Dr Parks charged the Richard Hardy estate 32.12 1/2 (pence?) for his medical services. It may be that Richard Hardy's last wife was a Quarles or a Parks.

All corrections and additions are invited. Richard did not have a will but he had a intestate court proceeding after his death. His next younger sister Mary Ann Hardy Anderson (Allen Anderson) is still alive in 1850 and her age was given by her as 78 (1772). If anything, a woman will make herself younger so I think we can trust that year as a minimum age for her. The next birth after that is Daniel at January 1777 which is on his tombstone. After that there my Robert Hardy born about 1782. John Hardy seem to have had a birth every 5 years, but that is misleading -in those days some babies died. I give the births of those who survived as Sarah 1767 d. 5 May 1841, Richard 1769-1843, Mary 1772-19 Feb 1851, Daniel 3 Jan.1777-1842, Robert 1782-29 May 1843), William 23 Apr 1785- 18 June 1842, John 30 Dec 1788 -13 Jul 1851 , Covington 1793-1743.I give the year 1843 as a guess because so many other people in the South died that year when yellow fever struck. There is a date on internet of him b. 1 Jun 1789 in Edgefield District, South Carolina but this is impossible since his brother William before him was born 5 months before him 30 Dec 1788. His mother Ann would have had to be pregnant the month after giving birth and the baby Covington born 5 months premature which was impossible in those days.

Everyone thought the court preceedings settled the matter of of who his children were. Susannah Hardy Thompkins, Martha Hardy Lucious and Richard Holt Hardy, as well as the widow Mary Polly Hardy for herself and daughter Elizabeth, went to court against Thomas Hardy, Lucy W. Hardy Parks, Tabitha Octavia Hardy Glanton. Looking at his 1800-1840 census data for Richard, there were more children than I anticipated. There were children starting in the 1790s but only one born in the 1790s appeared in the court. He was sued. Thomas Hardy.

Then I found children of a James (R.) Hardy in Troup GA who are named the unusual names of the family which were - Octavia and Barbara- and that bothered the dickens out of me, especially because the court proceedings already had a James who was a minor. But I thought to myself it is not the first time southern families name two children the same name, often the first and the last son which causes all kinds of problems in identification. Well I kept staring at the census data of the Troup Cp James Hardy and it really bothered me because I "knew" he belonged. Suddenly I found a statement in Troup County and her People about Tabitha Octavia Hardy (Richard's daughter). It said Tavia Hardy's 2 brothers Thomas and James had also come to Troup in 1830 together. Well the James in the court papers was a minor in 1843 and anyway he did not go to GA as far as I know. Thomas Hardy was not assigned James' guardianship. Later I found that a letter had been written from a lawyer in Troop co to the administration in Edgefield for Thomas and James. James was accidentally cut out o f the estate settlement because of the misunderstanding of there being 2 James Hardys in the children list.

2. Richard HARDY b. about 1769 in Mecklenburg,VA When he died in Edgefield, South Carolina in 1843 he was about 73 years old. He had 3 wives and he had two sons named James. James R. in 1797 and James M. in 1831. James R. was probably James Richard. James M. was probably James Mathews Hardy.

1st wife was supposedly Barbary Holt alive till at least 1809 b ca 1775 ?(releases
dowry in in 1809-her father is probably James Holt Sr.) Was she the sister
to James Holt born ca 1800 in Long Cane Settlement Abbeville? Was she the
daughter of James Holt in the 1790 and 1800 census Long Cane Abeville?. He
is not the James Holt of NC who married Lydia Read-- they are well documented
and went from Halifax NC to Tenn and the births of their documented children
conflict with the births of your Edgefield SC births. I have seen marriages
between the Edgefield and Longcane people. "Taby" born 1822 names a child
Barbara.
2nd wife Elizabeth (may be Mathews) married him between 29 June 1825 (land transaction without a dower release) and her release of dowry 23 December 1826. I thought she had died by 6 April 1833 and probably in childbirth giving birth to James Hardy.
Out of the James and Elizabeth Mathews Bible:
*****Sarah Elizabeth Hardy b. Jan 21, 1830 ;--- daughter of Richard Hardy Jr? *****James Hardy b. Oct 1, 1831 ;--- son of Richard Hardy Jr?- only child of this union to survive to adulthood
 *****Sarah Elizabeth Hardy d. Aug 31, 1832
3rd wife of Richard Hardy was Mary “Polly” (may be Parks) married him sometime after 6 April 1833 (fights to get 1/3 of the estate and ends up with 1/8 in 1843) appeared in the 1843 lawsuit for the intestate estate of her husband Richard and her daughter was Elizabeth born ca 1841.

is executor of Richard ´s father´s will- John Hardy- unless John means his son Richard Hardy. That older Richard Hardy has been a puzzle to Carol Hardy Bryan for many years. Well we all wondered. A couple years ago she found out he had died in GA in 1812 and that his wife was Molly. This year Carol found out from Greg Mathews dialzero@bellsouth.net that he found the mention of Richard and wife Molly Hardy in the will of her father Charles Mathews in VA. They lived in Greenville Co VA right near Mecklenburg Co where John Hardy and Ann had first lived in the early part of her marriage. The area where Greenville is was Brunswick which was divided to include Greenville, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg and other counties.
1732 Brunswick gained from Isle of Wight.
1745 Lunenburg taken from Brunswick
1752 Halifax taken from Lunenburg
1754 Bedford from Lunenburg
1764 Charlotte and Mecklenburg taken from Lunenburg
1780 Greenville taken from Brunswick and Suxxex
below BM is Brunswick after they took it from IW (Isle of Wight) and divided Isle of Wight

The assumption now is that Richard Hardy living in Saluda Regiment section of Edgefield was John Hardy's brother. The John Hardy who married Ann Williams. I call that Richard Hardy the Saluda Richard Hardy -he had two sons William and possibly J. W. and a daughter Susannah Hardy. Carol Hardy Bryan is descended from him and lives near Saluda. Richard Hardy was the father of a William Hardy b 1 JUN 1781 died 13 OCT 1856 Saluda SC. who married Nancy "Nannie" Mathews who died 4 AUG 1871 in Old Edgefield Co., SC (now Saluda Co). That Richard Hardy b abt 1755, d 2 Oct 1809 (reference thru Carol Hardy Bryan). "His death date was recorded in a family Bible found among his descendants. Son William b 1781 was known to b a Virginian. "Old Edgefield Historical Society). Richard Hardy's wife was Martha "Molly" Matthews, daughter of Charles of Brunswick County, VA. (I put the Martha in there.)

When Richard Hardy Jr. s/o John and Ann came to Carolina, his family lived in Granville/Old 96th /Edgefield in the town founded by a Virginian called New Richmond, north of Campbellton, both of which no longer exist. I read this in a history book in a library when I visited this summer. Richard's father John Hardy bought land there after the Revolution ended. He also fought in it and may have served in SC and had seen the country and liked it. Many men had been killed and Tories had land confiscated so that land was available cheaply.

At some point Richard bought his own plantation, as well as inheriting from his father. According the wording in the John Hardy will, it sounded like John bought Richard his own plantation to get him started. This must be where he was living in 1790.The Cartledges bough land there too, I think. I finally found out it is Parkesville by looking for hours at census data.

The first drawing has an 1804 date on it. This where the land is his family settled. Richard inherited a piece of this but sold to his brother Robert eventually. His father had helped him buy a piece of land when Richard married.

Our Richard Hardy already been given a plantation he was living on and receives title at the death of his father. He is in 1790,

The 1790 neighborhood where Richard Hardy was living was his father's plantation. Apparently he moved later to present day Parkesville, before that called the PO at Parks Store. Richard Parkes came there from Wilkes/now Lincoln GA and got it rolling with his store and business activities. Richard Parkes/Parks is probably the son of John Parks:

  • "The Post office at Parks Store, SC was renamed Parksville in 1882 when the Augusta-Knoxville railroad was constructed north to McCormick. It was named after Richard Parks, a wealthy landholder and the owner and operator of several mills in the area.
"In the 1880's when the Savannah Valley railroad was under construction, an unusual event took place in Parksville. The Parks family cemetery was located where the station was to be built and had to be moved. When the grave of Richard Parks was opened, his "Body" casket was removed and put on two saw horses at the grave site. The metal door of the sealed glass window over the upper body slid open and showed him in a perfect state of preservation. Neighbors, relatives, and school children viewed the body before he was reentered in the Parksville Cemetery. He had died twenty years earlier on April 12, 1861, the day of the first shots on Fort Sumter. Parksville is the only town actually located on the shore of Lake Thurmod. Hunting & fishing licenses, cold drinks and snacks are available at Houston's Bait & Tackle."
    Parksville from http://www.mccormickcountysc.com/towns/par.html

When Richard Hardy's father died by 1799, Richard must have sold out what he had to one of his brothers. Here Richard Hardy is living next to Thomas Furgeson who is named as Elizabeth Hardy's guardian in the intestate proceedings of 1843. It is also where Margaret Cunningham Cartledge and Mary Polly unknown Hardy, widow of Richard, end of living apparently on the same property according to the 1860 census. But they were also neighbors in 1850 (see image above). as well as before that. I wonder if Mary is a Parks, a cousin to Richard Parks. I wish I knew the deed records.

In 1830 census Richard is born 1760-69 with a 15 to 19 year old boy at home 1811- 1815 which would be Richard Holt Hardy born 7 Feb 1814. His wife is age 40-49 (1780-89) and 2 girls are 5-9 and 10-14: 1821-1825, 1816-1820 Martha Ann Hardy

next door Edmund Cartledge is age 80-89 with a woman 50-59 and a boy 20-29. Not far away are Elihu L. Cartledge with wife Margaret 2 boys and a girl (they only had 3 children), Samuel Cartledge age 30-39 with younger wife and a boy and a girl, and Sarah Hardy Cunningham age 60-69 (1760-1769) Richard's sister. Also in the neighborhood on the next page are old Abiah Morgan age 60-69, sons Drewry and Evan, as well as Richard Parks age 30-40. The area was eventually named after him, unless he moved perhaps.

In 1840 Richard is 70 to 79 years old (1761-1770) and had 2 boys in the house 5-10 and 2 women 40-50. One must be Mary Polly who is about to give birth to Elizabeth in early 1841.

James Day Hardy rose to great distinction in the affairs of
southwestern Troup County, Georgia. His obituary found in the minutes of Troup Factory Lodge Number 115, Free and Accepted Masons, states:
"James Day Hardy was one of the pioneers of Troup County's settlement, one of the old guard who have given our county its name and fame as the home of a people possessed of all the elements of true and excellent manhood. Brother Hardy was true and sincere in all the relations of life, generous, liberal, and hospitable, a man of energy and industry, applying himself with assiduous persistence to whatever his hand found to do. His open-handed generosity was ever extended to any call for individual aid or public enterprise, and we feel that his death has caused a void in our community which will be difficult to fill" ("Troup County, Georgia And Her People" by Martha S. Anderson and Danny Knight, Volume VII, October 1987, No. 4)

TRIBUTE TO MRS. ANN HARDY BY COUNTY LINE CHURCH
    (wife of Josiah Cunningham Hardy)

God in his wisdom has called from among us our much beloved sister and
mother in Israel, Ann Hardy; and while we know we cannot add to her
happiness, nor to her virtues while she lived; yet we desire to submit
the following facts and resolutions, for the benefit of all who are
left behind; that by her life and departure there might be mad some
lasting impressions for good upon the living.
Sister Hardy was born February 26, 1822, married November 6, 1839; her
husband died December 13th, 1853, leaving her a widow with five small
children. She joined the County Line Baptist Church August 11, 1846,
where her membership remained until summoned by her God on January 31,
1891, to appear before him. In the life of Sister Hardy we have the
evidences of a true Christian, a devoted mother, a beloved and highly
esteemed member of the church, and a faithful servant of the Lord. She
was always ready with her substance and presence to aid and honor the
cause of her master, and while she realized the circumstances in which
she was thrown to worldly affairs, with five small children to care
for, and with limited means pecuniarly, she never lost sight of the
cause she professed. When the expenses of the church or her pastor were
to be met, the "widow's mite" was ever ready: her life showed that her
treasures were not of this world, for her heart's desire was in heaven,
and of her it can be said, "she visited the widow and orphans in their
affliction and kept herself spotted from the world," and "she being
dead yet speaketh." Now we bow with humble submission to the will of
God in his providential dealing with us, having the blessed assurance
that our loss and bereavement are her everlasting gain and happiness.
Therefore, be it resolved, that in the death of Sister Hardy, the
church has lost one of its strong stays and a faithful servant, the
prayer meeting and Sunday School a devoted advocate, the community a
worthy and appreciated neighbor, the sick, a sympathetic and efficient
nurse, the preacher an attentive, tender-hearted hearer, the cause of
the Master a faithful doer and consistent Christian, and her children
the dearest and most valuable friend upon earth. Her never ceasing
prayers were for their eternal salvation. She was to them an intercessor
ever pleading with God for Mercy.
Resolved, 2nd, that we, the members of County Line Church, do enter
into covenant that we will, by the help of Almighty God, be obedient to
the request, so often made by our departed sister, to pray for her
    children.
Resolved, 3rd, that we tender our love and sympathy to her bereft
family and relatives in their irreparable loss and as them to look
alone to God's grace for comfort. We now commend her loved ones to God,
who will be a present help in time of need, and we ask them to put
their trust in Jesus Christ, for [torn] we hope we all may meet her
again in heaven and with Christ our Savior to live forever.
Resolved, 4th, that a copy of these resolutions be sent to the
Christian Index and LaGrange Reporter for publication, and that they be
    recorded in our church book.
Respectfully submitted by John E. Smith, a member of County Line Church, Adopted by the church while in conference.

The Atlanta Constitution is writing up short sketches of the members of the constitutional convention, soon to assemble in Atlanta. From it, we copy the following sketches of some of the delegates, from this election district: Lemuel L. Hardy was born in Troup county on the 5th of October 1828 and received a plain but practical education in the home schools. He was married to Miss Huguley of Monroe county. His father, a sturdy and successful farmer, was born in Virginia, married in South Carolina and moved to Georgia in 1827. Capt. Hardy seems never to have politically ambitious, having never held any other office than that of Notary Public. He served in the State Troops during the war as Captain. He was a Whig until the dissolution of the Southern wing of that party and has since been a Democrat. He is a gentleman of enlarged ideas and is keenly alive to the desires and necessities
of his constituents in Troup county. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/troup/bios/hardy897gbs.txt

    3. James R. Hardy b. Dec 31, 1797 Edgefield Co, SC Died: Nov 18, 1873 Troup Co, Ga married Ann Emily Griffis 1808–1873. She may have been the listed Polly Griffis and sister to Lucy Ann Griffis who married Richard Holt Hardy. They were not mentioned in the court proceedings after Richard died, but based on the names of her children, and where thhe lived and died, and the fact that a story about Richard's daughter appeared in Troup Co saying, "About 1830 two of Mrs. Glanton’s brothers, Thomas and James Hardy, came from South Carolina and settled in Troup. " I have placed him as a son in law of Richard. I once saw a trabscription of a letter written by a Troup Co GA attorney to Edgefield courts concerning the intestate Richard Hardy. He was writing for Lucy Parks, Octavia Glanton , Thomas Hardy and James Hardy. The court only names one James which must have been a mistake because o f a mixup being 2 James Hardys applying for the estate. James R. named 2 of his children family names of parents Richard Hardy and Barbary Holt-a daughter Octavia "Tavie" and a Barbara.

J.H. Glanton, retired planter, La Grange, Troup Co., Ga., son of Abner and Tavia (Hardy) Glanton, was born in Monroe county, Ga., in 1829. His parents were natives of South Carolina, whence they came in an ox-cart to Georgia in 1827, and settled first in Monroe, in the woods, and dwelt in tents until cabins could be provided. After a stay of a year or two in Monroe, they removed to Troup county, where they made a permanent home. About 1830 two of Mrs. Glanton’s brothers, Thomas and James Hardy, came from South Carolina and settled in Troup. These were all pioneer families. Thomas was a soldier in the war of 1812. Mr. Glanton was reared on the plantation, and was educated at the old-time “old-field” school, taught in the historic dirt-floor log school house. He has been a farmer all his life, and has devoted his time and attention to his agricultural interests.
In consequence of this, when the“unpleasantness” began he sent a substitute to the army; subsequently enlisted in two different companies, but was detailed for local service in the commissary department. He started in life with but little, but by strict attention, keeping abreast with improved methods and implements, and judicious management and investment, has become one of Troup county’s solidest and most substantial citizens. Mr. Glanton was married in 1852 to Miss Louisiana L. Anderson - born in Meriwether county, Ga. - daughter of James R. and Caroline (McQueen) Anderson.

Obit B J Hughs Richard Holt Hardy - A FRIEND OF THE HARDYS
Died at his home in Hardy, Mississippi, Sunday, 30 Oct., 1892, at one p. m., the beloved friend,
citizen, and Christian, Richard Holt Hardy. He was born in Edgefield District, S. C.,
the 7th day of February, 1814, and lived to the ripe age of 78 years, 8 months, and thirteen days. The 17th day of August, 1836, he was married to Miss Lucy Griffis, sister of the late, and in memory much cherished, Mr. Jesse Griffis. In 1844, he moved to Mississippi and settled in what was then Yalobusha County. He had been unwell for several weeks and frequently said "his departure was near." Sunday morning he was up at his usual hour attending to the feeding of his stock and after eating breakfast with his family, complained of feeling badly and laid down upon his be. Later in the day he grew worse and his family becoming alarmed, their faithful physician, Dr. W. F.Barksdale, was summoned to his bedside, but the ministrations of his devoted wife and together with the physicians' skill were unavailing when, at one o'clock, he peacefully and calmly passed away to his celestial rest.
At the age of 16, he embraced the Christian faith and united with the Baptist church, and
after settling in Mississippi, joined Mt. Paran Baptist Church, which later became the Hardy
Baptist Church. He was a consistent, and useful member of his church, acting as clerk and for
years a faithful deacon. For upwards of 20 years, he was the efficient and trusted treasurer
of the Yalobusha Baptist Association, and was once elected to the civil office of Assessor of
Grenada County. He filled out his official term of two years with eminent satisfaction to his constituency.
He was a man of commanding appearance, with a most strikingly honest personality. He was
the exemplar of true life and true manhood; a pious husband and father, and an honest man.
His life was beautifully impressive, and such a life cannot be lost to his community. Many will
continue to think of this Godly man, and in their moments of solitude or wakeful hours of the night, will say "Let me too live the life of the righteous, and let my last end be like his." He left an aged and loving wife, a devoted daughter and a grand-son and grand-daughter in tears over their bereavement, but they are full of faith and cheerfully looking forward to a happy reunion again. Child of Elizabeth (Matthews? sister to James Mathews) and Richard Hardy:
    10. James M. HARDY minor in 1843 probably born about 1830?
recorded in the James Mathews Bible and her children were probably named after men in her family, rather than Richard's:
    Sarah Elizabeth Hardy b. Jan 21, 1830 died Aug 31, 1832
James Hardy born Oct 1, 1831
Olif Hardy died Nov 2, 1831
In 1850 Saluda is James (M.) Hardy is with Elizabeth Mathews born 1790 SC (husband was James) and her children-
    Elizabeth 36
Lewellin (Goode) 34 (a male name)
    John 33
    James (Mac) 26
    (William) Franklin 23
At first I thought James was just working there but in 1860 he is still there. The 1790 Elizabeth has died and the children have divided the estate and James had a part, though not quite so big- could be his share of Richard Hardy's estate.
Greg Mathews says:I believe that James Mathews was a brother of Drury, Lewis and Sugar Jones Mathews who were all sons of William and Mary Mathews. This whole clan lived around the Cambridge area of Edgefield right on Half Way Swamp. At the moment I do not have any documentary evidence that these Mathews relate to me, however, I do believe that it is so. My Mathews family which settled on the Saluda were from the same part of southern VA as all of these Hardy's were. Richard and Molly Hardy were living beside my 4G grandfather's brother so they all knew each other.
Anyway, here is the Bible transcription reference:
Saluda Co Library: Family Bible Records (Old Ninety Six District Chapter, South Carolina Genealogical Society), p. 124 There is no editor or compiler listed, no publisher, and no date of publication (very strange). The page with the listing does state that the bible is in the possession of a man named Grady Hill.

"The Post office at Parks Store, SC was renamed Parksville in 1882 when the

Augusta-Knoxville railroad was constructed north to McCormick. It was named after
Richard Parks, a wealthy landholder and the owner and operator of several mills in

an unusual event took place in Parksville. The Parks family cemetery was located

Parks was opened, his "Body" casket was removed and put on two saw horses at the
grave site. The metal door of the sealed glass window over the upper body slid open
and showed him in a perfect state of preservation. Neighbors, relatives, and school
children viewed the body before he was reentered in the Parksville Cemetery. He had
died twenty years earlier on April 12, 1861, the day of the first shots on Fort
Sumter. Parksville is the only town actually located on the shore of Lake Thurmod.

"Deed Book 30, page 345 Jemima HARDY to beloved nephew Thomas Covington

respect, Negro girl Winny with her increase, Winny to remain in my

eighteen, said girl is to be handed over and the money arising from her
hire to be equally divided between said Thomas and Patsey.
Witnesses: Henry Briggs, Thomas Ingram. Jemima (x) Hardy.
Proven May 1811 by Henry Briggs before John R. Bartee, J. P.
    Recorded 15 May 1811.
Jemima Hardy appeared in the 1810 census of Edgefield with the following persons in
    her household:
    1 Male under 10, 2 males 16-26 1 female under 10, 1 female 26-45
This indicates to me that either her husband was away, or
she was a widow. She does not appear in the Edgefield census again. A
Jemima Hardy was a member of Hardy's Baptist Church which was on the
Carolina side of the Savannah River about ten miles above Augusta, GA.
She was baptised in Nov 1809 and deceased in Mar of 1814. Baptised in
Oct. of 1809 were John Hardy who was dismissed by letter Oct 1818, and
Mary was baptised in Oct of 1809 and dismissed by letter Dec of 1817.
This was the same church that John Hardy (son of Richard and Mary
Covington Hardy) belonged to and his sons Richard and wife Barbary
    [Barbara - supposed to be Holt]; Covington and wife Elizabeth Howerton;
Daniel [who married Mary Roebuck]; John [who married Clarissa Roebuck].
At the end of the next decade the Hardy children are making their
preparations to implant themselves in Indian land through Troop Co.
    Georgia, and on to Coosa,AL"

The second Plat 1 January 1828 says the plat shows the land "formerly held by the
late John Hardy dec'd but now resurveyed and subdivided amongst his six sons
situated on Sweet Water in Edgefield District----"
It has Nancy Hardy's "x" mark dated 1 January 1828 and is the sale of Robert's
original portion combined with 2 portions he bought from his brothers Richard
and Covington before they left for Alabama. The total was 685 acres. On that
day he also completed the transaction of another 450 acre property. Another property
of 61 and a half acres was found in the books by Carol Bryan in Edgefield. I have no
idea exactly how large his total holdings were, but it was at least 1200 acres. Robert W.
Hardy married Nancy Peebles Browning on 31 JUL 1823 in Montgomery Co AL before the
county was divided. She was the daughter of JOHN BROWNING of Greene Co GA
Company: 2 REG'T (JENKIN'S), GEORGIA VOLS. AND MILITIA. Rank In: CAPTAIN Rank Out:
CAPTAIN Roll-Box: 27 Roll-Rec: 2704. Her mother was Nancy Peebles. Take note that
William Hardy had the land with "the white house." It looks like it was an L shape
with a back narrow wing. It is on Five Notch Road near the fork in the road and
before Sweet Water Creek which appears after the fork in the road. Eventually brother Robert bought him out.

An interesting old archived letter from Carol Hardy Bryan:
    From: Carol Hardy Bryan
Subject: Which Richard Hardy was the son of John and Ann Williams Hardy?
    Date: Tue, 01 Feb 2000 10:03:47 -0500

Here's the next step in the process to correctly identify the family of
    John and Ann Williams Hardy.

I live right here in Edgefield and have extracted every Hardy record I
could get my hand on, which is quite a few. Each child of John and Ann has
been correctly identified to my satisfaction except one: Richard. At the
time that John and Ann's son Richard was in Edgefield there were several
Richard Hardys in the area. To correctly pin him down so that correct
family lines could be identified has been a bear. In the past many
researchers have made non-objective decisions concerning just which one was
    THE one.

Will y'all now help me decipher and put this issue to rest for all time,
    please!

The most well recognized Richard was one whose estate record is recorded
here in Edgefield. Before we can surely state when he was born, we have to
determine which Richard he is, but he died prior to 6 Dec 1843 in Edgefield
County, SC. I'm going to try to give you as much as I can without being
    verbose.

lying in the fork of Stephens and Bird Creeks containing about 180 acres
adjoining Tompkins and Jennings, Abram Kilcrease, Richard Parks and
Stephens Creek. Recorded 19 Oct 1837. My research has proven this to be
land right at Callaham's Church mentioned above. There is even now a mill
on Stevens Creek [Price's Mill], but the creek is a large one and no old
mills would have survived floods in the past. The church was dismantled
and moved to what is now Parksville if you want to consult a map. It sat,
however, right across Stevens Creek from the mill and there are a few
graves still in the woods at the old church site though none have to do
    with the Hardy family.
